How To Clean Aluminium Venetian Blinds
Venetian blinds are pleasure to own regardless of the choice of material you decide to go with. However, they are easy to forget when it comes to general upkeep – after all, the trick to having beautiful Venetian blinds is to give them a light clean on a regular basis to avoid dirt and dust building up, increasing their longevity! Read on for a quick guide on how to clean your aluminium Venetian blinds.
Cleaning with a dry cloth or blind duster
Getting rid of excess dust from the surface of your aluminium blinds is a fairly simple task – all you need to do is pick up a dry cloth and work your way across the panels by gently gliding the cloth between each panel. Make this easier and quicker on yourself by making sure you are cleaning the top of the bottom panel, and the bottom of the top panel in the same gliding motion – this avoids having to close the blinds on the opposite side and repeating. Many retailers sell specialist Venetian blind dusters which makes this even easier to do.
Cleaning with a vacuum cleaner
Another option for dry cleaning your aluminium Venetian blinds is to use a vacuum cleaner with an upholstery attachment. Without the attachment, you risk scratching or damaging the blind, which is especially true for aluminium Venetian blinds, whereas the risk of this happening is slightly lower on wooden blinds, for example. You should also double-check your vacuum cleaner’s suction power as the suction can sometimes pull the slats out of shape.
Cleaning with a damp cloth
Sometimes your aluminium Venetian blinds can develop some minor stains or become quite grimy, especially if they are in the kitchen. To tackle this, you will need a damp cloth and preferably some cleaning spray. Once cleaned, make sure to pat the blinds dry.
Deep cleaning
Every now and then, the time will come where you’ll need to deep clean your blinds, which means you’ll have to completely remove them from their fitting. This method might not be suitable for wooden Venetian blinds as the grain can swell, so keep this in mind. If you’re not sure of the best way to remove your blinds for deep cleaning, please double-check with the manufacturer.
To give your blinds a deep clean, you can follow these steps:
Fill your bath tub with warm water and slowly submerge your aluminium Venetian blinds, making sure they are completely soaked, then add a cleaning solution (in this case, washing up liquid is just fine). Leave the blinds to soak for anything from half an hour to three hours, depending on how dirty they are. If there are any stains that don’t come off during soaking, you may need to use a soft brush to gently remove any remaining dirt or grime.
Rinse with cold water, using your shower head to spray it all over until the soap has completely been removed. Make sure the blinds are completely dry before you put them back in place so that they don’t develop mould If the weather is dry, and do not leave them on warm radiators because they may warp.
Once the blinds are dried, carefully put them back in place. With regular light cleaning, you should only have to deep clean them once or twice a year.
